alright when it comes to setting up gears in such im in the dark...seen it done a hundred times but never got into it enough to pay attention...

ive been noticing some funky shit going on in the axles since i swapped it in, it was already setup with the 4.10's and detroit when i got it...never even popped the cover off until now to see what was going on and found this...

is it just me or is it setup super tight? and yes those are pinion marks on the detroit...sorry for the shitty pictues it was getting dark

so whats my problem....

Damn, that's not good. Looks like the pinion depth is to far into the diff. I would start from scratch myself.

Yeah the pinion is too deep.. Looks like maybe there's a wear pattern on the the edge of the ring gear as well..

I would say the pinion is way to deep and backlash will be way loose once you get the pinion correct.

Wow man that sucks. I have no advice here as I am a noob to gearing, but I hope you get her figured out soon.

I have no idea personally but Jon, try Macro mode on the camera for clearer close up pictures.

Is the pinion loose? (that's usually how such marks get onto the diff carrier).

I see what looks like an extremely shallow contact pattern on the ring gear teeth (that thing had to have been making some noise like that too). Whatever the case, it needs to be checked out for sure (might be savable if the teeth aren't scored too badly... you'll need to examine the pinion teeth for any abnormal wear on them as well). The rust on the carrier also shows that it's been exposed to water at some point.

The pinion depth is way too shallow. If it was too deep, then it would be farther away from the carrier. Depending on how much mileage you've put on, included with the previous owner, your gears are fawked. Get a new set. Sorry...I know that's not the thing you want to hear.

Basically what's happened is that the gears have been broken in already, and no matter what you do, it's not going to change this. They WILL howl if you just try to reset them, and will most likely just wear that much faster.

I can't tell what it was that broke off...but my bet is that something has failed quite badly. Maybe one of the bolts that hold the detroit together. If the detroit is still good, then you could probably run it with those marks on the outside of it, but since you're going to be pulling it all apart anyhow...be sure to check it really well!

Jon, we need to swap your gears out, I wouldn't run those anymore, everything is out of spec and as stated above will only get worse if we tried to reset them...I'm coming up that way saturday afternoon/evening/sunday morning, I can swing by and check it out if you want me too, let me know before I leave and I will bring my tools...

Glissons is riddled with 8.8 4.10s. We'll go get you another set.

Definately gonna have to take it all apart, even just to appraise who f$%$$ up everything is. If your detroit is fine, I bought gears and an install kit on ebay for like $200, and installed everything myself. Looking at the skills you got putting your rig together, you should be able to tackle an install/setup no problem.

actually it hasnt been making any noise, just noticed alot of slop in the pinion...yea i figured the gears were toast from the pattern but they are gong to be junked here before too long anyways most likely when i swap over to a FW 8.8

there seems to be some slop in the dretroit but from what i can see there isnt any damage, did some reading on pirate and it looks like the springs inside can wear agaisnt the side plates so ill probably look into the rebuild kit from summit
