Hey guys. I'm rebuilding an 8.8 to drop in my ranger. I've replaced the pinion seal and I've got a new flange that I've installed as well.

I've read this tech article: http://www.therangerstation.com/Magazine/Summer2011/pinion_seals.htm

But I didn't mark the nut/flange before removing it so I'm not sure how tight to make this. Some sites say 160 foot lbs, others say "til it's tight".

Note: this is without any gears in the rear end.

Couple questions:
  • Should I wait to tighten this back down after I've re-installed the gears?
  • I've still got a gap between the gray part of the flange and the seal/rear end. Should there be a gao?
  • Is 160 foot lbs enough?
  • Is this video accurate? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8APYO2sZyJU

Thanks for the help.:icon_thumby:

Yes the vid is very accurate assuming you installed a new crush sleeve.

What if I didn't install a new crush sleeve? I just replaced the seal.

How tight should the bolt be?

Enough to get 10 in-lbs preload torque, some people will say that is OK,,, others will say replace sleeve,,, others will say replace bearings and sleeve while you have it down.

Crush sleeves are ~$5 for 2 at O'Reilly's. It would be better to replace it while its out. Are you putting new gears in it?

He is just changing the pinion seal, I would almost wager that thousands are changed every year without needing the crush sleeve changed.

I didn't change mine when I did the pinion seal a couple years ago. I forget what spec I used to tighten the nut though.

Check under gear installs, the spec is probably there.

Technically, the crush sleeve is a 1 time use item, but I dont replace them just to do a seal.
