ive got a 2001 4x4 ranger. im running 33s and 4.10s with open diffs now with the intentions of going to 4.56s or 4.88s and 35s when my superlift gets here. and its time to get the rear end some sort of posi unit. i talked to the 4wheelparts guys snd they said the lockrite dont like more than a 32 inch tire? but theve only seen it on jeeps so far. the ford racing trac loc is another option. they were trying to talk me into a auburn limited slip but idk. i want the back tires to turn together offroad but not wear bad on the street and while turning. any advise on stuff TRS members have esperience with would be good. im tryign to keep the cost of the unit under 500 if possible

Myself, I run a lunchbox locker and daily drive mine. Quite honestly, I rather like it. It's leaps and bound better than a limited slip and still gives you some sort of a differential action through corners (so long as you aren't on the gas). It also fits well within your budget range.
As far as not running any larger than a 32" tire, Mine has over 40 thousand on it without so much as a hick-up running 33's... other than the sub zero temperatures we get here in Canada causing it to not work quite rite unless you run synthetic oil (-30c and colder), that's it. No adverse tire wear... no weird handling characteristics... nothing.
Now, with the above being said, I will agree with others when they say that a lunchbox is a crude form of a Detroit locker... but with the amount spent on a Detroit locker, I can buy two lunchbox lockers and still have a few bucks left for beer.

^ agreed. I daily my truck with 33's and a lockright, and i love it. Once and a while youll hear it unloading, but thats minor. Get a lockright, and call it a day...soo much better than that POS l/s that was in my truck.

My vote would be the lockright second and the Detroit first.

For cheap, add another side gear shim/washer to your open dif and get l/s for ~$5.00

go for a detroit. the traclok is crap. but if you really need to watch money go for a lockrite. or you could go selectable with an arb or e-locker
