I got an explorer 8.8 rear end with disks and 4.10's, The problem is that the carrier was welded, this wouldn't be a problem if it was just a trail truck, but its my DD. Anyway I'm replacing the carrier and putting a lock right in it. My question is, if I pull the carrier with the ring gear but not the pinion do I have to go through all of the gear set up? like if a swap the ring gear to the new carrier can I just go a head and bolt it back in? because my pinion depth hasn't changed.

You may get lucky. I have 4 times out of 5 with replacing same with same. I had same issue, some asshat welded up the rear, so I swapped out a open carrier for open carrier. and pattern was perfect. Side to side shims are a hellava lot easier to adjust than that depth.

You will need to check the ring gear backlash to make sure it's the same as before. You won't need to mess with the pinion at all though.
