I'm sure this has been covered a million times, but I'm going to ask any way. Other than the obvious like axles are bigger, bearings are bigger, disk brakes instead of drum, is there anything actualy better about a 31 spline? Has anyone had problems with a 28? Ever broken axles, sheared splines or blew bearings? Disk brakes in the rear would be nice, are they that much better than 10" drums?
The reason I'm asking is I have the option of buying two 8'8s one from a ranger one from a explorer. Both the same price. The ranger is 3:73 which I'm running now, I but need to go lower, and it also comes with a set of 4:10, is a direct bolt in, and is a open so a lock-right or aussie would go right in. The explorer is 3:73 and is L/S, so it would need the mods to make it spring over, need a open carrier swap (to lock it) as well as some lower gears. So my question is it worth the extra money and work? I like to run my truck pretty hard, do some rock crawling. But at the end of the day its my DD, and not a designated off road rig. What do ya think?
