79" 302 converted to EFI

I swapped a 79" 302 in my 87" ford ranger, now I'm wanting to convert it to EFI, I bought a used EFI kit off ebay, it Comes with the upper and lower 5.0 HO intake, all bolts, fuel injectors, rails, coil, distrbutor, fuel pump, wire harness and computer, out of an 87" mustang. Now the questions I have is I'm using the original C4 tranny off the 79" will the computer still work for it even though the original tranny the EFI came off of was an AOD? If not, is there another computer I can swap it out with that will work for the C4 and what mod's do I need to make to accomplish this? Also, will the heads I have on there still work, or do I need to replace them as well? And one more question, I have a mild cam in the motor, will that cause issues with the EFI converstion, if so what can I do to fix that? thank you

What computer do you have?

The computer you have should work just fine. The AOD is not computer controlled.

The EFI harness and computer is off an 87" mustang 5.0 with an AOD tranny, I have a 79" thuderbird 302 with a C4 tranny.

The heads will be fine.
The cam may cause issues with the Speed Density ECU, as the MAP sensor relies on manifold vacuum signal to run the engine. (there is no vacuum to the MAP/BP sensor in a later Mass Air system, it is open to... Barometric Pressure...)
It may idle just fine, I wouldn't sweat this too much. Yet.

As stated above, you can use any trans with the '87-'93 Mustang computers.

Have a look on the Oxygen sensor harness. There will be a loop at the connector. Find out which two circuits are looped together (find the circuits in the engine harness). This will tell you how to wire it correctly, as auto/manual Mustangs differed.
One circuit will be going to pin30 at the ECU(60 pin connector), the other will either be pin46, or a non-ECU circuit going to the starter relay.

What fireing order is you'r engine? The 87 SEFI mustang computer is for the H.O or 351 fireing order and will not work with a 302 based cam.

The only way that I know of is by changing the cam.

Pete

And make sure you don't mix and match roller vs flat tappet parts.

To run the non-HO cam all you have to do is change the wiring on the distributor ( obviously ) and change the wiring to the injectors.
