I need to replace the passenger side manifold on my 97 460. The studs were just out 20,000 miles and roughly 4 years ago...they shouldnt come out to bad should they?

Hmmmmm.

I would soak them with penetrating oil for a week or so before attempting that. But only you know how bad they look.

Snap snap snappidity snap!

Im not screwing with it lol. My mechanic is. But im tryin to get an idea of if ill have to pay for head R&R

Hopefully he has induction heater...or at least that is what I would try if I owned one. Then torch.

I remember one time i just got the engine hot and they all came right out. Not fully warm but about 10 min of running...it was an old 351W i had. Not sure if it was a fluke or not.

That usually helps.
On the 5.4l 3valve motor, if you got the engine hot before you pull the spark plug they usually don’t break.
On our 08-09 GMC 5500s (6.6L), to do glow plugs, injectors, or exhaust manifolds you have to run them until they’re up to full operating temp before you attempt to remove any bolts or else you’ll snap every one of them.

If you make sure the manifold is flat once you get it off and reinstall it using the stainless steel Ford bolts it should last. We used to send the manifolds to a machine shop and have them planed occasionally. If it has stainless bolts now and one broke your guy is in for a battle.

I dont know if they used stainless or not when they pulled the motor.

I shouldnt have to get a new manilfold shaved should i?

Check it with a straight edge to be sure. If it's within .003" you're all set.

If the bolts feel like they are too tight or may break I just fire up the torches and blow the heads off. Once the manifold is off you can get a set of vice grips on the stud and it usualy comes out pretty easy.

Are you from Michigan?

Cause that don't necessarily work around here. Sometimes they grow together. And I just smash them with a hammer.

I'm this case I would bet it was issue free.

Havent done it yet.

But based on a visual anaylisis i think it wont be to bad.

Next couple weeks...

I'd rather heat the head a little and remove the bolt that way instead of cutting off the heads. It takes less extra time to finesse the bolts out than it does to break them off and have to drill and tap them.

An old rotten manifold. I bust it up around what used to be bolt......turn bolt growths out....
