7.5 to 8.8 conversion


When and how does it whine, at what speeds, and does the whine change pitch, and if so, does it follow engine speed or wheel speed?

It's EXTREMELY likely that it's actually the tires, as that's the directly corresponding modification, and tires are often a cause of whine. Is the tech in question financially invested in your tire purchase? If so, he's probably lying about the problem.
 
It's a whine that starts at about 15 mph. It changes a little but not much. It's about the same pitch all the way through.

But Dave is a good friend of mine and I work with him so I don't think he would give me false info. I'll probably bring it to work tomorrow and get it on a lift and see what's goin on.

Whine after I put new tires on it! The only whine new tires can make a ride make is the tires themselves! Put the old tires back on there and the whine will go away.
Rear ends either make noises or they don't. If the old tires are gone then get a friend that has wheels that fit to give you the lone of two of them for a few minutes.
BTW tell us exactly what tires you purchased we all want to know what to stay away from.

just for grins check the lube level. How many psi in the tires. Last, aggressive tread patterns can be noisy. Town and Country snow tires used to be called "singers " :D
 
Just did last night. Used a little cuz the pinion seal leaks a little. I'm running 45 psi in them. And they're 31x10

They aren't bad looking tires and I'd hate to think they're that noisy even at 15 mph

I put a set of those on my last pickup (3/4 ton) and they were surprisingly noisy. I even had my front end aligned just to make sure it was the tires and not the alignment. It WAS them tires.

Awesome guys. I might just jack up the rear end tonight with the tires off the ground and find out what it is. They weren't noisy the first 100 or so miles though.

Most likely that is the wheel. To check it out rig up a device on the floor that holds a pointer if some sort against the outside of the wheel. Then turn the wheel by hand to see how much runout there is in the wheel.
Also there is a possibility the tire was installed under a great amount of pressure without first coating the mating surfaces between the wheel and the tire. This can cause the tire to not center correctly on the wheel.
But that isn't what is causing the noise.

Well 1. I mounted them myself. I cleaned them properly and no wheels took more than an ounce and a half of weight on one side of each one which is pretty damn good for tires that size. And I think the axle bearing is bad on that side.

Not wheel bearings. Assuming it's the pinion bearing or some other bearing...a bearing kit is 350$ or another shot at a rear end is 100$

I'd borrow some other tires before putting any more time or money into more parts; it's best to test things before replacing them.
 
I jacked the thing up and it was the rear end. Refer to the video
