:annoyed:
There is a local speed shop that I've dealt with in the past and believe him to be a decent guy and who knows (especially fords) what he is doing.
I walked in to inquire about putting a lock right in my 7.5. Mind you the man has a stock full of ring sets and lockers just sitting on shelves.., In the waiting area.. along with V8s and super chargers.. talk about a kid in a candy store..

Anyways, he said is that an 8.8? I said no, looking at the door jam it's a 7.5/3.55. He says "Oh.. they don't have lock rights for 7.5s.. just 8.8s and up. He said he could find me a 8.8 out of a yard and rebuild it with the lock right and any gearing I want.. new bearings.. yadda yadda yadda for 800 installed.

NOT exactly what I was shooting for just for some aide in traction!

And then I find THISSS!!!!!

I don't think he was just tryin to milk money out of me.. maybe he just wasn't aware. But he is a big Mustang guy (just a muscle car guy in general) and I know they used both these rears.

Does anyone know if the lock right is still available for a 7.5 so I can drop one on his desk when I schedule my appointment?!?

A side note: Sometime ago he got a invited to Pinks with 2 weeks to build a 10 sec car. He did this out of an LX sitting in 2 foot grass for years. He walked away with a Firebird. Then sold it back to the dude. There were lots of write ups in the local paper about it.. plus I saw the episode

He is probably one of those people that "forgets" about certain things because they aren't mainstream enough to keep track of. I know ALOT of Dodge guys that don't know that a MoPar small block has the same firing order as a SBC, so when another Dodge guy asks for it, and gets a reply from another LA block guy, the B/RB guys tend to show themselves as being "out of the loop", by crying that there is NO other firing order than whatever the B/RB order is. Ignorance is bliss, and appearantly, contagious.

Thanks for that Link. I hadn't got that far to look on Ebay for one (It can be an evil, evil place cause you can find EVERYTHING yo ever wanted).. I thought I'd ask here first. Almost makes me wonder now if I wanna take him up on his offer to find/build/install and 8.8 rear end for 800 bucks (supposedly) considering the price of the 7.5 lock right by itself. That add says you can install them with basic mechanical skills and no simle tools. Things that make you san "Hmmmmm"!

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Granted he's a big 8.8 guy he probably spends more time pulling out 7.5s then installing anything into them. How difficult are they to install? I may just order one and wing it before we get blanketed here!

He was also tryin to talk me out of wanting to step up to a 3.73 from my3.55. I have the 5sp and I thought with the OD it wouldn't be that bad. IDK.. maybe the lower gears would be useless with it. I was just trying to snap-up the bottom end a bit. My overall tire diameter is only 27in. 225/60/16

I put the "No Slip" in mine, in the driveway. Just common tools and common sence. Good write up in the tech library on the install. You get down to that point of installing, there are a couple of things to watch for that never get mentioned. Got a picture that'd have to dig up of the caution to watch for.

Sounds like he may be more familiar with V8s than I4s, too.

Your 2.3L will like those 3.73s with that size tire.

Thanks Dave! Although i have pulled off things with my truck that i wasn't too sure of at first (like a new fuel pump) simply cause i like to tinker and save money at the same time i'll admit i never did anything with a rear other then change the seal and replace the U-Joint. I also hate to beat a dead horse but.. I used the forums search button to no end last night and i'm still trying to differenciate the Track-lock, Lock-right, and the No slip. I don't care about the clicking as i won't hear it anyway. I care about things breaking.. and the ease of a home install. Thanks again

DEFINITELY a V8 guy! Although he doesn't shy away from anything. When i was there he had a 540 stuffed into an S-10 extreme. That's a little "extreme" for me. He's more than willing to drop a streetable V8 in for me but that's out of my buget at the moment. My 2.3 still runs strong i'd just like to livin it up a bit. As far as the gearing it's real hilly here so i thought it would help. He said a 3.73 would probably be too short with my tranny gearing. I appreciate your input as this board would have a better idea. Now.. Do i gear the 7.5 or do i invest the 800+ or so on him finding, building, installing an 8.8?

I say try looking in the junkyards for a 8.8 from an "X". The 3.73 was quite common in them, and for you to put under the Rnager, just weld on new spring perches right above the exsisting ones from the "X". You can also upgrade to rear disc, with some prudent shopping around.

Never pulled a rear end although there is a yard super close to me where i could practice i suppose. I'd prefer bolt on installation as the only welder i know is a hundred miles away. Something out of a gen 3 would bolt up i assume. Some people swear by the lock right others i see are now bitching about them so i don't know what to do. I don't give a crap about ratcheting i just don't want to replace it in 6 months.

i would say get the locker, i want one too,and all ive got is good feedback from what ive asked.
prolly the ones that bitch out are because the device isnt working as it had to because of severe conditions.
according to the specs iv read it says u cant use it with big tires.
stuff 33-35 tires or bigger and go rock crawling and its gonna fail.
use it in a light fashion and i guess its gonna be ok.
thats what ive read andthat what i understand

Fair enough. My attempts at wheeling this thing are over as i've grown up and wonder what the hell i was trying to do lol. However i didn't know if was an exceptable street locker. The only unpaved road it sees anymore is my own. And now they're calling for 6+ here in eastern PA. A new pair of Winterforce tires are going on today. They are by far the best snow tire i've ever used. The locker would be a good pairing i think. Not to mention a whole lot more fun! Countersteer and throttle control would only make the commute that much more interesting!

There is the Lock-Rite which is made more for the off-road and then there is the No-Slip which more for the DD. The No-Slip runs about another $200 is one problem. I've had mine in for over 30K miles with not a problem, just my Winter DD. Sounds like some "good" snow is headed your way. Morning news said that DC could get up to 12".
