Hey guys,
I have been wanting to swap the 7.5 in my ranger for the 8.8 with a limited slip. I know there are many many posts but I cannot seem to find my question anywhere. So my question is as follows...

1. Will a stock ranger 90-92 bolt straight up?
2. I currently have a disk swap on my 7.5 will it fit on the new 8.8
3. I have heard you will need to shorten the driveshaft, will i need to if it is from a ranger?

Anything will help. Thanks!

1. Yes
2. No idea
3. I wouldn't think so. Granted my shaft is custom but I had no issues when I swapped from a 7.5 to a 8.8.

2. It should bolt right up

My replies to your questions are inserted in BLUE to make it easier for others to separate later

The rear will "bolt-in" with two issues....
First the mating flange on a 8.8" rear axles are all the larger diameter, so
you will either need to swap out the driveshaft yoke adapter...
(the square piece with the two "Ears" that mounts to the U-joint)

Second, mid-1989-up rear axles (7.5 & 8.8") use larger diameter bolts
12mm instead of 10mm) to hold the lower shock eye to the bracket
on the axle, so you will either need to replace your rear shocks with
those for a 1990-up OR replace the sleeve in the lower bushing to accept the larger bolt.

If you use the smaller bolt you bill destroy the welded-on lower shock bracket in short order.

Should bolt on with no issues.

No, other than the flange diameter, an 8.8" bolts right in, there is no shaft length difference.

Anything will help. Thanks!

Hm, interesting so if my thinking is correct then if I find a ranger axle 29 spline then the disks should bolt up? Has anyone done the gas tank swap to the rear with the 8.8?

The '96 Explorer 8.8 I put in my Ranger still fit perfectly with my 7.5" driveshaft minus the bolt pattern being off.

I used the yoke adapter from my '86 parts truck to line up the holes, it fit over the boss on the pinion flange perfectly too.

I drilled and tapped new holes in the flange, been working great for four years now.
