I am not much af a mechanic. I can do minor things but when it comes to things like this, I am lost.
I have a 2000 Ranger with 4wd. A 7.5, 3.73, which is shot. When the mechanic pulled the cover, my gears fell out. He wants me to change the entire rearend out however, I am having a hard time locating one closeby or for the prices I have read about on the forum.
I have found a 7.5, 4.10 differential and gears for a very good price, around $15. Can I simply have this changed out? What are the pros and cons of this change if there are any? I do not do any offroading just street driving.
If someone around the NW Georgia area has a 7.5, 3.73 rearend for sale, please let me know.
Thank you very much for any help. It is very much appreciated.

you will need to re gear the front axle if you change to a 4.10 ratio in the back, otherwise you will break things. its easier to change axle assemblies rather than just the gears because you just have to bolt and unbolt the ubolts on the axle and leaf springs, vs changing gear stes and setting them up for proper mesh and such.

I also found that the rear diff in the newer 7.5 is different from the older ones because of the RABS and speed control ring on the differential.

15's a really good deal if they are in good condition otherwise i would just pony up the dough for a new axle or new gears... simply because Well I personally would not put shady parts into my truck, sure its cheap and will fix it now but if it blows up 100 or 1000 miles later your stuck in the the same pickle your were before with possibly more broken parts.

The 4.10 housing+gears IS a good deal, but you still have to set the pinion depth and other things. I cannot remember the exact years the 7.5 came with 4.10's. I would fit, and it's still all 28 splines, but overall, I agree w/ Original_Ranger84. The 4WD cannot be used since the front & rear tires will be moving at different speeds, and you'll just grind gears. Since you don't have the equipment to properly calibrate the new set, you would have to take it to a professional that does not "eye-ball it."

A new 7.5 3.73 is your easiest, best option while keeping everything factory and working (like speedometer and ABS). You can do the full axle swap yourself with no problems.
