good start...now a 460,some 44s,and a short bed ranger will fill the bill!

Still kinda torn between starting over or ripping back into the 85.
I know where there is 3 460's so thats covered.
Yesterday a friend told me where a small bell C6 is so I have to check that out,it will leave me the option of keeping the 302 and maybe selling the 44's.
I'm going to pull the hubs on the front today............if I can pry myself off the couch.....lol.

Don't know what you are really building but with the later FE big blocks, the top dog C-6's came with the 1 3/8" input spline, hard to find, don't know a thing about the 385 motors.

Trans and Tcase was bolted to a 460,dont have a clue what it came out of.
It's sitting in the shop a the Salvage Yard in the dry.

Going to put it all in this..

Lol..............I thought you would say that!
Selling the 44's would be tough!Took me a long time to find some I could afford.

if it were up to me,i would keep the 85 as it is and find another body and frame for the big build.the 85 looks like a good practical machine as it is,anything with 44s pretty much gets into the 'toy only' category.still worth doing,though....everyone needs more toys.

Pics........Tearing down the front.
After pulling the crispy lockout and the axel snap ring, out come the 4 bolts holding the uni bearing hub.

The bearing looks to be OK.

Empty!Had to cut the ball joints out...........That was fun!
Every piece on this pig is freakin heavy as hell!

save me some of thet steak-i'm hungry.

Got this bad boy home today and tore into it.
Other than being beat all to hell where they pulled it,its not in bad shape inside.
No ring grove and not to gunked up inside.Came out of a cube van,the guy drove it to the yard.
The intake ports on the heads are freakin huge!

The one thing I have found out is ....Parts are dirt cheap for this tank!!
Bearings,rings,gaskets..............Not cheap crap either.
You can buy a Lunati,Comp cam for $130 bucks shipped!
Its cheaper to build a 460 from scratch than it is a 302.

it'll last longer too....go ahead, beat the crap out of it.where the 302 will be spitting rod bearings at you,the 460 will laugh, and ask when you are going to get serious.the only thing to really worry about upgrading is the valve keepers-get some good ones.valve float works as a rev limiter,as long as you keep them in the heads instead of the pistons.

Good info on the keepers,Thanks!
I hope to do a simple rigs/bearings on the block, maybe a small cam with Alum. intake.
There is no ring grove what so ever.Has been punched .030 over so its been into before. You can turn it over with a 12" Cresent Wrench with no major effort.
Im going for a dirt cheap build so any tricks you could share please do.
