So with 250k miles (and 1 rebuild) our 98 Ranger's 5R55E was basically DOA, reverse worked here and there, but it wouldnt shift out of first gear. This was after the separator plate and EPC valve fix were installed.

I wound up picking up a 98 Ranger M5R1 with 44k miles, as well as all the other parts needed. Found a local shop and dropped it off yesterday afternoon, $500 later I picked it up this afternoon :yahoo: With the automatic computer and the range switch hanging by the wires (showing neutral) it started on the first key!

Need to bleed the clutch one more time, and install the MT wiring harness and a few little things here and there, but man does it feel good to be able to trust your transmission to shift on time haha :D

Total cost was about $1,800 for parts and labor, but after taking it on a short test-drive, it was well worth it. The rebuild by MAACO by the previous owner was $2,400, and it only lasted 35k miles, ouch!

I'll wind up making some how-to's on removing the dash and maybe a write-up on doing the swap and all the parts. Its a lot of work and not exactly cheap, but still cheaper than a auto trans rebuild.
