What are the differences between these two transmissions.

I have a 97 ex cab 4x4 ranger with a bad tranny. I just got a 2wd 98 Explorer with a good tranny. What will be needed to make the swap?

Is the tranny case the same and I just put the transfer case on the back end?

No. The tailhousings and tailshafts are different. Changing tailshafts requires disassembling the entire transmission.

Damn.

Thanks for the answer!

I had to cancel the sale but found an 01 4x4 Explorer for $300 with a good tranny. Just waiting for the tranny code from the owner. Hopefully....

Question

I have a 1999 Ext cab, 4.0 4wd and I had the O/D light flash the other day and I found out that there is no longer Reverse, O/D, and I have two codes in the computer, one is a p0733 and the other is a P0735. Both say to do test A in the electronics diagnosis. I have not done that yet as I have been told that when the reverse is out the trans is out. I have found a wrecked 2001 with a good trans in it. I can get the whole truck for a good price and It is a 4wd and 4.0 engine. Are the transmissions interchangeable and have the same electronics in them. Thanks for any help that you can give me, I just replace the cylinder heads on my truck and got it running well about a thousand miles ago.

More Information

After decoding the vin number of the donor truck I have found out that it is a SOHC engine and I have the pushrod engine. Do they have the same bellhousing bolt pattern?

Thanks for the replies.

Yes... For the most part. (Its only 1 bolt different.) A 5r55e will have both patterns.

Thanks

I appreciate the information I have loved my old truck and would like to keep it on the road. This evening when I get back home I will try to test the electrical system and try to get a positive idea that it needs to be swapped or just have a solenoid or two that have given up. Knowing my luck lately it will be toast.
