i have a 5r55e transmission that is leaking from the extension housing between the transfer case and trans. what needs to be done to replace that seal? i would imagine obviously the transfercase needs to come off (it is anyway since its bad) and the trans mount, then the extension housing, but is there a govenor on the back of the 5r55e? can the seal be removed without taking the trans apart?

Is it leaking between the transmission and extension, or extension and transfer case?

There is a gasket between the trans and extension, but it can be filled with RTV also. The transfer case is bolted to the extension using just RTV.

The extension is full of trans fluid, so it will leak out when you remove the transfer case, and even more if you remove the extension. The only thing that is in the extension is the parking pawl. I'll check on my dissasembled trans if its better to leave it in Park or take it out of Park in order to make it easier to go back together, but you'll probably have to fiddle with it to engage with the output shaft when you reassemble.

do u need special tools to take the extension off the transmission ? mine is leaking also

No, just a regular socket set, think 17 or 18mm sockets.
