Hey yall, been beating my head against a rock trying to figure this one out. So for some backstory: on July 4th I was driving about , an hour and a half from Conway to Batesville(AR) for the firework show. About ten minutes out I started noticing loud Grinding/Rattle at 60MPH, so I slowed down and puttered along to the fireworks. Drove five miles home deciding to look at it the following morning. Walked outside and saw a pool of tranny fluid on the ground Oh $#!+. Checked it out and found out of the six bolts that hold the tranny to the transfer case, three were gone, two had almost completed unscrewed themselves, and there was only one bolt holding everthing together. Got some new bolts and tightened everything back up, filled up the fluid.

Drove it for a while, it leaked a little fluid but I just kept an eye on it. Grinding/Rattle was still there. I usually do my own work but school started up and I didnt have the time to screw with it, so I took it to a shop and they wanted $250 for a new gasket to stop the leak, and they said the back brakes were tore up and needed replaced(I had noticed this), the old ones were rattling around causing the noise. Had them fix the brakes and the noise was still there, though the braking was 100x times better. Just drove it for a while keeping it below 60 and never had a problem. Tinkered with it here and there and couldn't figure out the noise.

Well just recently overdrive has been giving issue. It will jump into overdrive then go back to drive after 5-10 seconds or if I take my foot of the gas. O/D flashing so I took it to a tranny shop and they said it had codes 1,2,5 gear ratio incorrect, wanted to put a new tranny in for $1700. I told them I would holler back when I had the cash. Meanwhile it drives without a hitch when I keep o/d off and keep it under 60MPH, so this should get me along until I have the cash. For giggles I pulled the pan and tried to check solenoids, but my ohmmeter is older than Moses and didnt seem to be working. Changed filter and checked pan, no metal shavings, but there was a fair amount of band/clutch wear. Put everything back on and adjusted the o/d band(snug, back off 1.5 turn), it was a half turn loose. Filled up with fluid and went for a test drive, was able to stay in overdrive at one point but when I let off gas it jumped and hard shifted into 4th. Gonna keep o/d off and be nice to it untill I can get a new tranny, but is there anything else I could try checking or is the tranny just f***ed?

Sorry for the long post. Btw its a 99 Ford Ranger 4x4 Off Road, 4.0 V6, 5r55e, 4.10 gears, 1.5 inch wheel spacers, rugged ridge lockin-lockout hubs, Monroe gas in front with Sensa-Tracs in the rear.

The 5R(5 speed) is the same transmission as the 4R(4-speed)

What Ford did since they had full shift control added for the 4R was to engage OD while transmission was still in 1st gear, that gave them the 5R transmission, they added a new 2nd gear.

4R has these gears: 2.47 /........../1.47 / 1.00 / 0.75
5R has these gears: 2.47 / 1.87 / 1.47 / 1.00 / 0.75

2.47(1st) and .75(OD) combined give ratio of 1.87

Very clever these Americans, lol.

Point being if you have no trouble with 2nd gear then I would think OD setup and solenoid is fine.

It may be a problem with speed sensors, I think there are 3 on the 5R
OSS(output shaft speed)
ISS(intermediate shaft speed)
TSS(turbine shaft speed)

A problem with one of these could also create those codes of incorrect ratio because computer needs to match speed sensor speeds to know what gear is selected or should be selected.

Not sure how to test those but a quick look at the connectors and wires would be first step.

OSS would also be used for speedometer, I assume it is stable no odd jumping or dropping, that would just leave ISS or TSS
