what will a 58mm throttle body do on an 88 or newer 2.9

Um no it will add a tad of response. Thats all.

People tend to think a bigger tb will add power. it doesn't. Your engine still holds the same amount of air, but a bigger tb will get the air in a tad faster. Hence a bit of response.

Same scenario as the zip tie mod.

Hard to describe exactly what it does but I swear by the 58mm TB for 88+ 2.9s, I took it off once just to see and I hated it without it.

I'll tell you exactly. You will lose a bit of your low end around town torque. You will get this back where it is more useful, if you drive on the highway more often, at highway speeds. My other truck used to haul ass around town, I installed the bigger TB and was very let down, but once I got on the highway it was like someone flipped a switch. Every 2.9 I get gets one. If I were making a low geared crawler or something I would keep the smaller TB

I know what it is!

It's them damn Ford engineers! They let us down again. We all could have had more response if they had just put a bigger throttle body on our engines.
Shouldn't have cost Ford more money... I wonder why they didn't do that?
Seems they should have known the cylinders weren't filling up with the TB they spent so many months designing..

Cool; that's what I thought he meant just never saw that thread before and figured this one out myself a while back. Thanks!!

i like people who think that auto engineers designed the "perfect" vehicle . engineers are payed to build a car that gets decent mileage with decent power and decent emissions. unfortunately you cant get outstanding on all 3. by increasing power in the low end you will lose some in the high end and vice versa. the amount of air that is allowed to enter your engine is going to change the power band. this is what a larger or smaller tb will do. the size will shift it higher or lower depending which way you go
