I got 500 miles on my v8 swap, 1999 4x4. Swapped in 5.0 from a 2000 mounty and used the mounty auto trans. The truck runs great but im not happy with the way it shifts. It seems like it shifts way to fast, im in overdrive at 35-40 mph if i dont get on real hard. the mounty had 3.73 gears the ranger has 4.10. im thinking the gearing in rear end is my issue. just wondering if anyone else is bugged with this issue?

mine is the same way(95 with 97 mountaineer 5.0 engine and trans)... 3.73 with 285/75/16 tires. thinking i need 4.10's or 4.56's to correct my issue

It is simply a matter of reprogramming the PCM, you can tell it to shift into any gear at any speed with any amount of firmness. Leave the gears alone, 4.10's are a wonderful thing!

+1

Without everything lining up it ends up shooting from the hip on its shiftpoints... usually with what seems like spaghetti western accuracy. It is getting its wires crossed thinking it has 3.73's but it doesn't.

My F-150 struggles with the same thing since I went from 29" tires to 32" tires, it just doesn't really seem to know when it should shift.

I plan on a reprogram after i get a set of headers and swap out my cam. It drives me nut to take off in 1st and only roll 5 feet then the dumb thing shifts to 2nd!

A couple questions for you...I have an 02 sport Trac 410 gears and 275/55/20 (32's) with a 99 explorer 5.0 donor having 373 gears. Here's my question (cause I don't remember if you ran into this issue), is your speedo working, or are you having to use a gps for your speedo? I ask this cause if your speedo is not working then your trans is operating in limp home mode. Even though it appears to be shifting correctly, its actually not. Mine shifted soft and early til I got my SCT and custom tune for my trans and gears. I got it tuned to shift very firm/hard to extend the life of the trans (the smoother/softer the trans shifts means it has to "slip" into the next gear, causing heat and clutch wear) and i also increased shift firmness by an additional 25% from the user setting. I also have a user setting to shift early to late by variable settings. I still have not fixed my speedo, but i have almost all components to get it working...

My speedo works great, i havent fixed my tac yet but thats next on the list and it shifts real firm but real fast. like i saidod at 35mph. A meet and greet would be cool.

Is say its probably due to the different gear ratio. Once you get a tune and change some parameters, I'm sure your shidting will be a little better, mine improved. Did you have to do any mods for your speedo, or did it work with your swap? Do you have a link to your build, I'd like to read it again...

Do these things have an adaptave shift strategy? My F-150 shifts like absolute mush whenever I disconnect the battery until I get it worn back into where I like it.

What year is your F150? Ford computer systems "learn" operations, so if you disconnect the ecu memory power (or clear dtc's) the ecu will learn the system from the sensor's signals, and provide an adjusted program for the engine to operate...

my speedo works, its off about 6mph compared to the old setup(wierd, same speed sensor from old transfercase):icon_confused:

95-97 rangers with 96-97 ex donors are plug n play, they didn't have the electrical differences that 98-01 donors have...
