So, from what I understand, the shifter knob is "glued" onto the shaft on my 09' Ranger?
has anyone here removed; replaced the knob with an alternative?
what is on the end of the stick? is it threaded?
please let me know if you know...

A wrench to slip over the lever but smaller than the end of the knob and hit up on the wrench with a hammer. The end is splined. FWIW aluminum knobs suck ass in the winter time.

There's more info on this around somewhere I just don't have time to find it right now.

the shifter is held on with glue that when heated to X temperature for X period time will release.

I spent a couple hours one day trying to pry it off with the shift rod in a vise and could not get it to release. That glue is just too damn strong. I was trying to get my shift rod bent a bit (so my knuckles don't hit the dash) and I just ended up taking it to a machine shop for them to bend it (on a hydro press) with knob/boot assembly and the plastic bit around that all still on.

If you have the shift arm off the trans and don't have a heat gun, I don't see why you couldn't put it in the oven on low heat for a while before pulling off the knob. PS wear gloves.:icon_rofl:

Ha, wish I had the same problem. On my truck if it gets to about 80F outside the knob will just come off in my hand while I shift!

mine had been removed before, and came off with a bit of pulling. I ended up jb welding the new one in place because it kept rattling

hell yes they do, especially if you walk out the door with a wet hand and it sticks to the knob. I started wearing a glove when i drive, but then realized that it was easier to put glove over the knob

There is no glue from the factory on the Ranger shift knob.

It is an interference fit over the "splines" on the end of the lever.

Any GLUE was added later.

what I've had "rattling" problems with was not the knob itself, but rather
the little shift pattern medallion that is inserted in the knob.

And I usually fix that with a milk dud sized ball of butyl rubber

I actually like the stock shift knob, infact I went to the effort to cut the top off the factory shift lever drill it and tap it to screw it onto the lever of my Hurst shifter.
I cut it off just below the "collar" that holds up the factory shift boot.

why? because I didn't want anyone to know I have a Hurst Shifter.

I pulled mine out, haha... I like the stock shift knob too... Except when it comes off in my hand...

I have a box full of them

If one gets "loose" it goes in the trash.

there are plenty more absolutely unworn ones with their factory texture completely intact on T-case shifters in Rangers and F-series trucks.

Frankly I throw my shft knob away (or give it away with a sold transmission)
as soon as it starts to smooth off. this takes six to nine months.

Wow! Here I was thinking that all of them came from the factory with a nice smooth glossy finish, I didn't know they were textured, haha!!!!

Neither did I. I've probably never seen one with less than 140k on it.

Think about it.. how many people have monkey arms to ride around with their hand on the T-case shifter?

the texture gets worn off, but it takes a long time to wear it completely smooth.

BTW, The medallion is sold SEPERATELY when you buy the knob from a dealer.... so the T-case knob is exactly the same.

Just pry it up and pop it off....

They're supposed to be textured? I thought they were just supposed to look like plastic door knobs.

Look at a T-case shifter knob on any '88 or later it's the SAME knob.

Allan, I want a textured one.. How much to ship me a couple?

My t-case is textured, the tranny's is smooth as silk.
