When I sit and idle with clutch pedal all the way down and stick in 1st I hear a rattle. Go to neutral and release clutch pedal sound is gone.

Also as I release clutch pedal to take off the rattle increases and then goes away when clutch pedal completely released.

Could this be a throwout bearing?

If it's a rattle instead of a screetch it's likely a broken dampener spring or bad pilot bearing.

It's definitely a rattle. Also when I'm sitting at a stop light in neutral it can be very sticky getting to 1st or any other gear with the pedal all the way to the floor but shifting is smooth with clutch pedal down when coming to a rolling stop.

If pilot bearing is bad and considering I have 95,000 miles (2WD, 2004) should I just get the tranny rebuilt?

No, the pilot bearing is not in the transmission.

You need to replace the clutch. Everything inside the bellhousing. You don't care whether it's the release bearing or the pilot bearing; replace them both.

I know it costs 10x more than just the pilot bearing, but when you figure out what a PITA it is to get in there, you'll understand.
