I got a 87 ranger 4x4 with 5 speed manual, 2.9L engine. I got transmission issues. Bearings are making noise and 4th gear is starting to pop out. I got to order a rebuild kit, but I don't know what tranny I got. I did some research and it's either the TK5 or the FM145. How can I tell which one it's gonna be?

Assuming of course, unless you are original owner, someone didn't swap trans.

This should help you identify.

I think the most prominent feature is the drain plug. The FM145 has it dead center in the transmission inspection pan. The Toyo Kogo has it offset. That is what the shop manual shows, but I never looked at a Toyo Kogo so can't speak from first hand. Pictures of the drain aren't in the link above but there should be other housing features you can use to identify.

Thanks ab_slack! That link helped me figure it out. Looks like I got the TK5.
