5 quarts instead of 4.5?

Well the time has come to change my oil for the second time. The owners manual calls for 4.5 quarts of 5w-20. I bought the 5.1 quart jug from Advanced. Will it hurt if I put all of the oil from the jug in? Cause it is kind of a pain in the ass to pour some and then measure it all out.

Is it really that hard not to pour the whole thing in the engine? Pour most of it in, fire it up and check it. If it needs a splash more add it....

I just think its a pain, and I usually just end up throwing the extra out, and its expensive oil.

but yes. even a half a quart is not good for an engine. its that much more stress your putting on your oil pump.

stress on the oil pump is not why overfilling an engine is bad. When you overfill the engine the Crank starts to splash in the oil causing foaming, which

A) Builds pressure and can blow out the rear main seal
B) The Foamy stuff gets sucked up and doesn't really lubricate anything, thus wearing your engine. Quick.

But theres normally about a quart leeway before the crank starts hitting the oil.

I put in 4.5 quarts even with a filter change and its smack in the middle of the marked section

I just save that 1/2 quart and in 4 changes, the 5th is free more or less

this is true also. but over working your oil pump is not good either.

I run a 5 qt. jug in mine. It goes slightly over the full mark but have not had any issues.

I fill my oil to the top of the cross hatch on the dipstick, my 4.0 liter takes 5 quarts exactly with motorcraft FL-1A filter.

Edit: didnt realize you had a 3.0, its probably different

5 quarts in mine puts it right at the full mark with a filter change.

I just put 4.5 in and its right in between the lines, and the oil pressure is fine
