So what does it mena to grind the grears or cross pin? Does someone have a pic? Gettin ready to tare in my axles today and try get my ol truck back on all fours.

"Grinding gears" means to shift a manual transmission badly. It's not a literal thing. The "cross pin" is the 3rd part you remove from a differential, after the cover and the cross pin retaining screw. It's right through the center of the diff, and frees up the entire system when it's removed. The cross pin doesn't get ground either.

Unless I'm really confused...

He's talking about taking a grinder to the gears to make them fit.

Google is your friend.

That sounds like a really bad idea. Unless something is defective, everything should fit correctly from the start. I wouldn't trust myself to hand-grind anything straight, round, true, or concentric.

They won't fit without it. Google it. Plenty of people have it done without issue.

Im not familiar with the process or anything. I just know it needs to be done.

Interesting. I had no idea. I guess you learn something new every day.

It's just grinding off the corner of a tooth or two to get the cross pin in and out without having to use the stupid notched cross pin, get the ring gear mounted to the carrier without the cross pin installed then on one side only grind the teeth on the ring gear with a dremel or something until you can get the cross pin in and out, it's been like 4 years since I did mine but I don't think it hit the contact patch, if it did it just kissed it, and if it did hurt the strength I would know by now, I've put enough force on the axle to twist a tube and bend a leaf spring...
