Wondering what you guys think about these scratches. i think this cylinder is the worst out of the other 7 but they all seem to have a lil bit of it.

Normally i'd say you now have an excuse for a v8 swap, but since we're already there....

What promted you to tear down to this point and inspect the engine? Have you run a compression test? If it was smoking, burning oil, power loss, etc... Then i'd say its time for a rebuild. If it drove normally without burning oil or smoking, and if you feel it pulls just as strong as it ever did, maybe save some coin so when you do tear it down you can have it back in the truck in a weekend.

It hasnt been in the truck yet. i bought it to put in my truck and was just going through some of the engine before i put it in. so i decided i would take a look inside im replacing most of the gaskets and water pump and what not but was hoping to avoid taking the heads off.

Take them off now. IMO to me it is no longer worth the risk to go through all the work to put an engine in the truck without knowing what it is.

I didn't and I get to pull the heads in the truck because of excessive carbon buildup. :yahoo:

Few questions>>>

What do the cylinder walls look like farther up?

You can still see the cross-hatch marks, so it may be fairly fresh rebuild & the rings haven't seated yet. Don't look to be grooved, if they were grooved, then I'd say broke ring.

What'd the motor come out of?

How long has it sat since run?

What do the heads look like under the valve covers?

Havent pulled the valve covers off yet. I will probably do that tomorrow.

it came out of a 1988 Mustang GT.

Not sure how long it sat I noticed the cross hatching on the cylinder wall too i was thinking it looked fairly nice. will see i guess when i pull the valve covers.

How deep are the scrathes? Can you take your fingger nail over them and fell that they are deep?

Those vertical scratches are from broken rings. May also have broken ring lands on that piston. At the very least, pull the heads and see if there's a ridge at the top of the bores. If there's no ridge, you can get by with just reringing the pistons. I would also tear it down and inspect the crank journals and based on the condition of the crank, either go back with std size bearings or turn the crank and go undersize on the bearings. Also should install a new oilpump.

Do a compression test and then a cylinder leak down test and see what the readings are. Can you reach down there and feel the scratches with a flat blade screw driver to see if you can feel them. They dont look like grooves, they look more like rub marks from dirty oil or carbon.
