I recently lost my 4.0 and was considering a 5.0 swap but it needs to stay immisions legile so I wanted to use a explorer 5.0 I was wondering if the engine can function without the automatic because I way to keep a manual in the truck any help would be great
Thanks
Sean

Yes, the ECU needs to be programed so that the auto trans function is turned off.
ALSO You may be able to run it without retuning it though, it'd throw a CEL; not 100% sure though on that part.

There are a few things you need....

A tuner, for one. I suggest the SCT Xcal3...James Henson is one of the best tuners out there for these motors.

You can't use your stock transmission for the swap though. It won't bolt-up. And even if it did, the transmission is WAY too weak...I broke 3 of them with my old 4.0L.

You need to find a 3.8L/4.2L Manual Transmission from a 97-02 F-150. It puts the transmission shifter in the perfect location for your RBV.

There is an entire write up on Explorer Forums, complete with part numbers...

Thanks for the help i already have a trans and transfer case I got from a friend that will work on a 302 but it may require some fab work to make it fit but that's not a problem fabworks no big deal. I will deffinatly get in contact with James Henson

Did you even read the thread over on EF?

With the CORRECT combination of parts, namely the M5OD from a F150, and a BW 4406, there is ZERO fab work required. It all bolts up, and works flawlessly.

No I didn't look at the thread but I got the setup I have for free so why spend more money
