i got a 88 ranger 2 wheel drive and i just put a 5.0 carburated engine in it with a c4 transmission but the gears are way to short now what gears should i use?

please help!!!

you should do some 4.56s! lol jk jk i have a nine inch with 3.73s that im pretty sure will go pretty nice with my combo

3.73 is a good all around gear.
Whats in it now?

If you're running the stock height tires and wheels, then nothing deeper than 3.50's. 3.00 to 3.25's would be better as far as highway cruisin. I've got 3.50's in my Comet with a C-4 with 26" tires and it's turnin right around 3 grand at 70mph. Ditto for my Ranger with 3.73's and 28's.

im really not sure what rearend is in it or what gear but its all stocki think its a 7.5 but it had a 4 banger in it and we switched it all out and now its too low now it winds out to fast

Ain't it about time you found out ? I mean, come on, you did a V8 swap, but know nothing about the rearend ?

I've got a 90' with a a carbureted 302 as well. Mine had 3.73's, with 31" tires right now.

I don't really like it. I really want an AOD so that I can gear it lower and still go on the freeway.

My truck has 3.73s in the rear. I have an AOD, and I get 20mpg on the highway. i don't know what rpms i am turning, no tach, and it seems to be happy with the setup.

What size tires do you have?

If it helps any, I have 5.0 EFI with an AOD in my 88 Ranger 4x4. Stock rear is 4.10's and my overdrive wont stay locked in unless I am cruising on a flat road. If you have an AOD go at least 3.90 or 4.10. If you do a lot of highway driving above 60 then maybe 3.73 or a 3.55..... All depends on what you plan on doing with it.

That doesn't make any sense.

3.55's with 36" tires at 75 mph comes out to 1739 RPM.

Isn't that way to low???? :icon_confused:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a good cruising RPM for a 302 is around 2500. Isn't it?

I'm thinking about 35" tires and an AOD.
4.56's would put me at 2298 RPM at 75 mph.
4.88's would put me at 2460 RPM at 75 mph.

Which one would be better? Am I way off the reservation?

The optimal cruising rpms will depend on the engine build and camshaft used. No two are alike. Every motor has a sweet spot that gives the best fuel economy.
