Does anyone know anyone who knows a guy who has attempted this? My main concern would the the oil pan.... everything else can be fixed to some extent in my oponion.

Serious replies are needed, half-serious are encouraged, and out right stupiditiy welcomed.

Please keep it to real talk until we determine if this is possible, then we can go on and on and on and on.... about how we all would want to pay 6,500 for a new 302 in our trucks that aren't worth half that amount at the moment.

The fun starts...............NOW!

looks doable.. I mean the 4.6 has been done a few times, even a 460, so I don't see why it can't be. esp if you're a brave one and just fab your own crossmember... That and looks like the oil filter would definitely need to be relocated. who wants to try it first?

I know the swap has been discussed a lot on the Mustang sites, pros and cons. Seems like its the same basic dimensions as the 3 valve. Seen the motor as cheap as $6200 but then you need the $1200 electronics package and the alternator kit. $210. General opion was that other than being unique, just not worth it for the power and the work to get it in. Wouldn't be hard to fab up an oil pan.

It would be nuts in a Ranger... :icon_thumby:

An arguement for the $6200 is how much would it take to get a pushrod 302 to a dead reliable 400+hp with a factory tune? Usually it seems standalone harness stuff gets you more power yet. On a 80 degree day at Sturgis South Dakota (don't remember the elevation but it isn't sea level) and they were dynoing 380hp at the rear wheels with factory stock barely broken in cars.

Dunno how it would work out with a Ranger (I suppose a 3gen+ 2wd wouldn't be that bad) but my brother's '11 GT will flirt with 25mpg too... which a 400hp pushrod 302 wouldn't dream of even in a Mustang, even a factory 302 in a smaller/lighter Mustang would struggle to get there.

I would wait until there is a supply of used engines and get one of those, even the F-150 OHC 5.0 puts out pretty good numbers.

so does anyone have legit dimensions we can compare with a OG302?

They are closely related to the 4.6, this should give you something for the difference between it and a pushrod 302 (is that what OG is for?) The new 5.0 has the same bore spacing and deck height, so any differences between it and the 4.6 would be in the heads/valve covers.

Really the DOHC 4.6's fit in 98+ trucks pretty well, GregR had a thread going at some point and it looked like it came that way when he was done.

302
27-1/2 Inches long
20-3/4 Inches high
18-3/4 Inches wide

351W
27-1/2 Inches long
23-3/4 Inches high
21 Inches wide

4.6L SOHC
28 Inches long
26 Inches high
28-5/8 Inches wide

4.6L DOHC
28 Inches long
29-7/8 Inches high
30 Inches wide

yeah, totally needs a custom support/cross-member.

fact, the TTBs need a better one anyways.... maybe I'll fab it up, creat some jigs and produce them for those guys who want to pay 500 bucks to get an awesome peice of post modern welded art

The biggest problem I have seen (halfhearted looked into a 5.4 swap) is on a TTB/TIB truck the frame isn't wide enough for normal headers/manifolds and the steering is in the way.

I don't think it is really all that much with the crossmember itself, but about everything that connects to it.

The old pushrod 302 fits pretty nice (can still be snug in places though), so that is why I went with that.

I'm seeing that the new 302, though nice, just isn't really do-able. But we can continue to dream and just stick to the OG302 in reality.

I think it would be do-able on a newer (98+) truck though.

I agree, for a 83-97 it really isn't that feasable though.
