I got the 5.0 complete today and started it up.
1st problem I am having is that the truck has a rough idle
This is a 99 5.0 out of an explorer. I think it is because the cam syncro is not in properly because I just eyeballed it and I vaguely found tdc. Is there a trick to getting it right on.
Second problem there is tranny oil dripping out
of the transmission dip stick hole. Any ideas?

Last problem is one of the freeze plugs on the back is the head has a leak. Not quite sure how I am going to fix that yet.

Not sure if I call this success or failure.

Thanks
Moonpie

If you got it in and it runs, that's a success with just some minor set-backs. Leaking frezze plug in the back might be a little hard to fix without pulling motor again. I borrowed the special tool for setting the cam syncro over a weekend from the Ford dealer and can scan in from the manual on how to set it up right, but lots just eyeball it like you did. Motor mounts work alright? What headers you using?

The motor mounts worked good took me two tries to make them right but overall that went smooth. If you could scan that in it would be awesome. Still have to figure out this tranny leak from the dip stick. I might just ignore the freeze plug leak for a while till I can pull the motor. I am just hopping the cam syncro is the problem with this idle and not the timing chain.

Thanks man

I had the same problem with my trans dipstick tube, it is real finicky, but you might have to replace the O-ring and make sure you have it seated all the way in...Took me about 4 times before I finally got it sealed...

Ok I figured that was probably it that thing is such a pain in the ass to get in.

You might try packing that freeze plug with jb weld for a temp fix. But definately fix it right before winter! Needless to say, clean it good first, and give it time to cure before operating the engine. I used some kinda white goo on the freeze plugs when pounding them in on mine. Most stores should carry the right sealant.
