what swap would be better in my 84 ranger 4x4? i have the c5 tranny plus multiple 2wd c4s laying around.

thanks,
tom

I'd go 5.0 but I's sure check on getting it pass the emmission testing. I know of one out there running a 351 in his ranger and has no problem.

it all depends on your plans, usage and budget. the 4.0 has about the same hp as a 2V 302 but weighs less. im not sure about tourque #s but overall the 4.0 feels like a 302 at least when your running empty/not pulling a load. the 302 will take up more room under the hood and be a bit harder to change the plugs in. it all depends on what your really looking for.

Until you get a 4.0 to 2700rpm or so you wouldn't know it wasn't a V8
and a 5.0 is kind of a disappointment until you hit the same rpm.

The 4.0 cruises comfortably at 1700-1900rpm, the 5.0 ain't happy below 2600rpm

a 4.0 can give 20mph highway, I get 18mpg driving it like I stole it and 19.5 most other times.

Shit on a 679mile run TOWING another ranger on a tow dolly I got 16mpg
That's one 4.0, with a 5sp and 4.10 gears on 235's and TWO rangers getting
16mpg.

a 5.0? Bwhahahahahahaha!!!!! you are kidding, right?

Anyone getting as good as 15mpg with a 5.0 is lucky, anyone claiming
better than 17 is an out and out liar (or is incredibly bad at math)

And BTW, a stock 4.0 will do ANYTHING better than a 2V carb 302
and will give most 4bbl truck 302's a sound whipping.

what I tell people is if you really want a V8 you don't want a 302/5.0
you want a 351/5.8.

In identical F-series trucks a 5.8 will often get better mileage.

My brother was able to tickle 20mpg in his 5.8, 4.10 geared 5sp F-250
on 33's, a ranger with 1500lb less weight and 3/4 the frontal area...
geared to keep it from "spinning"... should do better.

Just got rid of a 95 5.0 f-150 that was my fathers. All it wanted to do was spin up all the time used a lot gas.Wish I could put it as good as Alan D but he is right on the mark. The thing I like about 4.0s is there made to run at the RPMs that I drive them, reminds me of a Dodge Cummins.

I'm running a 351 Cleveland in my 1991 Supercab Ranger! It's fast and fun to drive! But, I owned a 1992 with a 5.0 H.O. that was very quick also. :shok:

yeah if you do a 5.0l at least do that h.o. engine 87-93 area out of a mustang. they were pretty beastly and i def got 25mpg out of a 88 mustang convertible. that thing weight about 3200 i think. and had a t-5. but if you do a 5.0l stroke and bore it out to a 5.7l (347). make it a torque monster..... at least that is my plan for my truck lol

thanks guys. eather way i'll have efi. would a 4.0 work with the c-5? im trying to find the best combo to provide good power and decent mileage ...:icon_twisted:

I believe you get get better mileage with the 5.0... 4.0's aren't exactly known for their mileage...

performance and gas mileage you cant beat a manual. if you got with a 4.0 try to get a hold of a m5od or a m5od-hd
