Also, the 99-01 Explorer had the same fuel system as your Ranger, but a different PATS system. So that has to be addressed.


My 5.0 swap happened because it was a 17 year old’s dream truck. The exact final product is a refinement of the original concept and the 331 stroker part hasn’t happened yet, but basically it’s there. Are there more modern options that make more power? Absolutely. But this was a gravel driveway build of a kid’s dream. Like my Choptop, a fun toy. Will I possibly build something with a more modern engine? Most likely after I get a garage.

Swaps have a ton of variables. There’s some really cool options out there anymore, but the farther you venture off the beaten path, the more you need fab skills and dedication. A garage to work in helps a lot, even better is having a lift in the garage. None of that is necessary, of course, but it helps.

Thankfully, I have a garage. not a big one, but I have one. Plus friends who are willing to work for beers. I'm trying to avoid falling victim to "While I'm in there" syndrome.
I think, if I get the ECM brand new, it shouldn't come with any PATS flashed to it, so I should be able to have it redone.
Also... I think there's an 80% chance pats in my truck is already gone. The key I have is very likely NOT the original, and the truck starts fine.
I want a 5.0 because it's the motor the ranger should have had as its top option. I love this truck to death and I beat the shit out of it. It's gonna be a pig for a long time after I stop driving it every day. Plus, like you said, v8 noises.

so, i guess i am not clear .... the link posted, that company is a vin match. they dont custom program....but for 80 bux...just get it...and send it in for 200 to someone that will tune it... mars might do those still.

or, just order a 97 non pats unit and just live with it.

there are a few companies that will handle swaps on e bay.

at least when i have dealt with them they would not do anything except vin match. maybe it changed.

to get a pats deleted PROPER TUNE manual trans ecm is generally 2-400 bux depending on your HCI combo....and what flash setup you have.

or you can live with a stock flash....80 ux on sale.

i have one of those and one for a 351....this is what you want.

it is mass air, sefi, manual trans and runs the 96 ignition system and distributor.

and they have those i think still....hard to find in the wild.
