hey guy i know this has been asked a million times. i got a 99 ranger and im looking to drop a 5.0 in it. im looking for a explorer donor i was just wondering what would be the best year. i live in shitty Massachusetts and have a 99 so i gotta pass emissions.:annoyed: any advice and things to look out for would be great. ive read just about every thread on here and just want a straight forward answer. thanks

99~2001 are the best Ex 5.0 years for your 99.

thanks a lot. now if i use everything from the explorer would i pass MA emissions?

If you keep it factory stock and use everything from the Explorer including the 4 cats, you should pass. All the engine knows is that it is hauling around a little less weight and that can only help. Obviously, if the cats are used up or the engine has other problems that would cause it to fail in the original Ex, it would probably fail in the Ranger too.

I'm not an expert on Massachusetts but most states allow the use of the same year or newer swap engine and the completed vehicle then must meet the emission requirement for the year of the engine. Since the best swap engines are same year or newer (99~01 in a 99), you should be in good shape.

Your state motor vehicle department should be able to clearly confirm or deny that those are the rules before starting the swap.

I know for me, in canada, i was told that if i swapped my motor to a motor what was not offered at any time in the vehicle, 5.0 in a ranger, it could be e-tested as a hot rod and allowed slightly more leaniant e-test.

Where as if i swapped from a 3.0 to a 4.0 i would have to make sure i pass the requirement of that motor for that year of vehicle, you may want to look into your local emission regulatios and see if there is a hot rod type classification, may help you out some, before you go building something, and then cant drive it,
