The Stang has developed a tick. It doesn't do it all the time though. I can only get it to do it under light acceleration, and not by just sitting in the driveway. It only does it for 2 seconds or so, then it's OK again. It is definitely coming from under the hood. My initial reaction is possibly a lifter.

What will one of these roller lifters do when it fails? Will it click all the time, or only under certain conditions? Can I check the lifter any other way other than pulling the intake off, etc.? Any other scenarios?

take a good look at you plugs befor you go pulling thing apart. That will tell you if it's fuel/timming trouble.

It's not spark knock if it does it only under light acceleration or with no load.

First thing I'd check is a defective spark plug wire causing an arc or a leaking exhaust gasket.

Yeah, it's definitely not spark knock. It's possible it's a weird exhaust leak that only happens under certain conditions.....I have a new set of headers ready to go on it.

I just had this thought......I just barely put a new fuel pressure regulator on the thing before it started. I had to take the EGR valve off to access the FP regulator. Is there anything involved with the EGR, or vacuum that would cause a ticking type of noise under light acceleration? I really think it's all sealed up OK.

Also, a new development - I've also got a check engine light returning 2 codes for lean condition on the right side HEGO, and the ACT sensor shows bad.

It's spark knock caused by a temporary lean condition.

I'd check for a vacume leak. If you just had the EGR off you might have a bad gasket. Although that should set a lean code for both sides, it's still worth a look.

I think that's a good idea....I'll pull the valve off and see if the gasket somehow got messed up.

Well, the tick wound up being the header gasket. It blew the the paper right off it. I put the new headers on which have a one piece flange instead of a flange for each cylinder. I'm hoping this will keep this from happening again. Thanks for the help fellas!
