5.0 fuel injected engine swap

Well im still thinking carbed after reading this thread for my ranger. EFI would be nice, but i dont plan on driving this in the winter at all, and its just something to be loud in. So carbed is deffently the way for me. And it is easier to hook up if you dont know a whole lot about efi systems.

nothing wrong with getting a lil loud here and there..:D

Well now that you have decided which way you want to go :yahoo:....Go for it!!! :headbang:

The only time ive ever had a carb stumble on me was on a full throttle start when the engine was cold.

Come ride in my dually, you wont be able to tell its carbed except for when i pump the gas before i start it...

Oh, and i dont compare a 77 302 to a 96 300 btw....Your 94 EFI 302 would seem worthless next to a 94 300 I6 when being used like a truck should be used. Would i want a 300 in a mustang? No, same reason i dont want a 302 in a truck.

Its like argueing over Chevy and Ford, Coke or pepsi, Mcdonalds or burger king, etc etc. Both sides can keep argueing when in reality Either one gets you down the road, satisfys your thirst, or makes you not hungry.

A EFI system meters fuel and air into the cylinders through use of electronics. A carburator meters fuel and air into the cylinders through use of mechanics. Thats what it boils down to.

I prefer carbs because they do the same thing as EFI, and there alot simpler to work on, cheaper to fix, etc. Here are some questios You have to ask yourself to decide if EFI is right for you....

.How often will I be starting this thing and taking off full throttle when its -20* F?

Do i REALLY need my truck to run on its roof?

Is it really worth the hassle of traceing down miles and miles of colorful speghetti to track down those inevitable wireing gremlins that happens everytime you try to wire something that wasnt supposed to be there?

Is it REALLY worth the extra money, time, and effort to initally get the thing running?

Now after these questions doesnt seem smarter, and better, and eaiser, and cheaper to hook up a fuel line, throttle cable, and choke cable and call it a day?

dustin

properly/equally equipped the 302 wins the race every time, so you really lose me with that. economy is statistically identical for the most part.....e/e being 350 vs 373 gears

if you really understood how engines work, you would never want a properly tuned carb over properly tuned efi in a vehicle that sees winter.

its just mean to an engine to do that to it.:shok:

your just a big meanie to engines:thefinger:

Interesting thread. I just lost all my gears in my 94 ranger (4cyl with the a4ld). I pulled over, turned the truck off for afew seconds then turned it back on and got the gears back. I did this 2 more times until I got home. NOt really looking forward to a rebuild, so I was thinking:
what is the most straight forward swap to do--engine and tranny wise?

if a tranny rebuild is gonna be 8oo -1200 bucks, why not get a used 302 and tranny for the same price and swap it in?

mustangs, f-150s, explorers, crown vics, so many v-8s to choose from.
ps-- like all the forms of aspirations. I own fuel injection, carb, and even a bronco powered by propane. they all are great, as long as you dont run electricity, its cool.

possibly an electrical issue with a solo or speed sensor. is the fluid wasted?

yea thats what im thinking too, an electrical bug. i just drove it, didnt have a chance to go over 50 and i didnt go to far from home in case i broke, but it ran fine. the tranny was shifting like always and everything was fine.

the fluid was fine. no other symptoms when i lost the gears, excpet it was whinning when i was driving, i think it was whinning to find a gear but couldnt.

whats the next step??

I already did the solenoid for the 3-4 shift. this didnt fix the previous problem I had with the overdrive slipping.

what does a speed sensor have to do with anything?

Does that tranny have a vacuum modulator it would be on the passenger side toward the middle.

Yea I checked that first. the vacuum source, vacuum line, and modulator are all good.

also: I saw a 2wd 98 ford explorer at the junkyard with a 5.0 and tranny still connected. neither was molested. the engine was all intact. NOTHING WAS TAMPERED WITH! I really wanted it but, junkyard parts can be a real gamble. How would this swap go into my 94?? I am very mechanically compitent, so how much extras would I need and how much money?

* F?

Do i REALLY need my truck to run on its roof

later,
dustin

on its roof no, on its side YES...straight vertical on the back bumper with the headlights pointing at the moon at very low and very hight rpms YES YES AND YES.

Time travel is illegal good sir!

Carbs are ancient technology only fit for lawnmowers and go-carts.
