po said drive gear dropped off dizzie. he put one in but did not hook it up. he cut the plug off the wires and there it sits. seems to be an electronic type dizz- no points- and no module on the fender.
q1; do any of the dist's have everything inside the dist itself, meaning no module on the fender?
q2' will a points dist from a 1968 big block, probably a 390, fit and work? (local u-pull has one)
q3; if no 2 is 'NO', what will fit? i'm looking for CHEAP first, just to get it running.
i already have a bunch of cut n spliced wires so i'd rather go a route that does not involve more wiring splicing
thanks, dav

289 or 302 is all that will work and you have to have the right gear to go with your cam, cast iron for flat tappet and steel for roller.

They make self contained HEI dizzies that are aftermarket, any way to post a pic of what you have?

If cheap is what you want, look at Skip White Performance distributors (think that's the name), they have HEI distributors that only require hot wire to run, and they're way less than $100.

what's in there now looks like a durafire II (?) anyway, a dizz w/ a base, a middle part and a blue top, if that makes any sense. but it looks like stuff is missing inside, compared to what i saw at the you pull.
how far into the motor do i have to go to determine roller or flat tappet? i just got the water pump and timing cover back on and am trying to figure out what the po lost to mount the alt and ps (the ps pulley touches the frame now so i have some fabbing to do)
do the skip white dizzies care what cam it is?

i think i meant duraspark II. since everything the po did has had to be redone, i am certain that the dizz is whatever he found first, therefore looking at the gear on this dizz is meaningless. regretably, he did not just throw the old dizz in the bed of the truck

Any idea what the engine is out of? What the firing order is?

Duraspark distributor will have Vacuum Advance on it, it was made for Carburetor engines

Only thing inside is a 3 wire Hall Effect Sensor and a tone wheel on the shaft that the sensor "reads"

Cheapest, RELIABLE, spark system would be to match duraspark distributor to GMs HEI module.

Google: ford duraspark hei conversion

Very popular Ford carb engine conversion

steel gear

found a machined and 'blued' (actually i think it's phospate coating as it is black, like an M-16) steel dist gear (in the intake of the parts motor) that has the roll pin broken off, which is what the po said had happened. will pull dizzie-again- to see what gear is on it.
what is the effect of having the wrong dizzie? are the gear teeth cut at a different angle or thickness?

Either takes the teeth off the cam or the dizzy gear.
