ok i have a 87 ranger that i will be putting in a carberated 5.0 with a built aod. i want to keep it 4wd what problems am i going to run into? i will be keeping my dana 28 and my 7.5 as i will only have the money for the swap. my though was cant i take a drive trane from a early 90s modle f150? that has a manule t case? i allready have a 3inche bodylift.what i need to know about is wiring the engine? (i will have a custom dash) any help will be appreciated.

come on guys some one has haft to have info on this?????

Some of the questions I am not sure since I've never done an AOD 4wd swap, but I do know you will need an adapter to make it work. Should be able to find more info around, this has been done by other members and is a question that has been asked before.

As far as wiring, you'll need the EVTM for the donor and the EVTM for your Ranger. The EVTM for the Ranger will be a big help on the custom dash, but it's possible to figure it out with a mutlimeter and poking around to figure out the circuit on the back of it. It's good to have verifications of what you found against a good manual so you know it's right.

I remember there being some funny things with the cluster, like the power to it ran through resistor wire (I didn't use it and ran a new wire from an unused window circuit in my fuse panel to my gauges). There was also a small strange box that was a 5 volt voltage regulator, but not relevant to the aftermarket setup, just handy to know when you'll looking at it saying "
WTF is that?" One thing to really think about is how to make it removable - are you going to make it so that you have to unhook every single wire to get it out? Trust me, there are a lot of them - turn signals, brake light, check engine, brights, oil pres, temp, voltage, fuel, lumination, power, ground, etc.

look they mis-spelled the transmission name. intead of "aod" it should be "pos" they don't last with 135hp 2.9l's using an aod with a v8 is asking for trouble, expensive trouble to adapt it. the most common way is to get a full-size transmission/t-case setup with the correct bellhousing. then you just have a $60 driveshaft mod rather than a $300 adaptor plate to still have a terrible transmission. a used trans/t-case setup is usually around $150-$250

I have to say it. Do some reading. This forum is full of threads where people have begun and finished similar swap to yours. Just read what they've done.
Particularly Bob "Rwenzing" has used a full size transfer case. Read his very good posts, edit the parts you may not wnat to include.

Search the thousand posts on how to wire a carb.

It's all here for you to fine on your own.

I wasn't aware Ford Put an AOD trans behind the 2.9L V6? The AOD's internal structure is VERY strong. Theoretically, it's planetary gears will handle 50% more torque than the C4. Upgrade the soft parts, use a hardened input shaft or a torque converter that disables the OD input shaft, and grab a valvebody that recalibrates the circuits to run 3rd gear from the outer driven shaft (instead of the inner shaft) and you have a pretty stout trans with OD. Ofcourse, you could always grab an AODE or 4R70W and purchase a stand alone computer. The AODE/4R70W are pretty much the same as the old AOD except for a clutch in the converter to eliminate the OD input shaft, controlled electronically... and the wide gear ratio set on the 4R70W. With only a trans cooler, I've seen the AODE/4R70W withstand 400hp cars. See, you can have your cake and eat it too!

...and how is it expensive adapt it? Most all of them have a SBF bellhousing so it'll bolt right up.

EDIT:Oh, I get it. I think you meant "A4LD", not AOD. As the A4LD could be found behind the 2.9L, it IS garbage, and it would be expensive to adapt to a small block ford.
