Found a 98 5.0 exploder real cheap want to drop it into my 90 ranger then I want to use a f150 manual transmission. Did anyone ever do this swap? Looking for the simplest way of making it work any thoughts?

seems pretty simple and straight forward search for those that have done it to get little tidbits for the ins and outs of the tiny stuff that usually is the most time consuming

Ohh i was gonna dash swap and all

I was planning on the same swap as you, but with a 4wd F150 manual.

The biggest issue I would foresee is wiring. Swapping an obd2 engine and harness into an obd1 body might make the computers stop talking to each other. Been meaning to ask how all that would work but was waiting till closer to the swap to ask

1997-2003 F-150 manual trans(M5OD-R2, M5R2) and transfer case from a 4.2l V6 will bolt to the 5.0l V8 engine, same windsor bolt pattern, you will have to drill out the bellhousing holes about 1/8th inch as the 4.2l used metric bolts and the 5.0l used SAE

Newer manual transmissions don't have removable bellhousings, so are made engine specific, but have the same model number
i.e. an M5R2 from a 2000 F-150 with V8 won't fit 5.0l V8, same model number wrong bolt pattern
4.2l V6 has right bolt pattern

You only use one computer, the V8 computer, you pull out the old computer with its engine wiring harness and install the V8 computer with its engine wiring harness
The Explorer computer will have software for automatic transmission, and will "look for it" when in use, and of course, will not find it, lol
So it will turn on CEL(check engine light) to notify driver of the "missing transmission"

1998 Explorer computer will also have PATS(passive anti-theft system) and a PATS Module(above glove box)
PATS prevents fuel pump and fuel injectors from working unless the correct PATS Key is used, its not an alarm just causes No Start

You best bet is to find a Programmer that can reload new software on to the V8 computer that will delete the automatic trans software and the PATS software.
Check with local Speed Shops for guys that do "tuning" or check on ebay, Google: ebay services EEC-V Tuners
They can also install better software for power and/or MPG

Ill have to look around for that the ford dealer I talked to said PATS could not be disabled but they could flash the computer so it wasnt looking for the auto trans. so i would like to get alot more out of it like the heated seats, dash, etc but im sure its possible but Idk if its the best option.

ford dealers are uninformed

I have reprogrammed ecu's for exactly what your wanting no problem. There's literally thousands of tuners out there that can do the same take your pick and call any preferably someone local to you.

I would highly recommend against swapping the dash and all. The 5.0 swap is very simple no need in making it that difficult with the dash and all thats one of the biggest mistakes most people make.

I forgot about the dash/cluster, 1990 will need a cable drive for speedometer, Rangers used that thru 1994

1995 and up cluster won't fit 1990 dash, as far as I know

Around 1996/7 Ford stopped including the hole in the casting for speedometer cable hookup, in 2WD trans and transfer cases, might be able to drill it out and tap it, and install a worm gear on output shaft.

Or get older BW1356 transfer case that has speedometer cable setup, it will bolt to the 1997-2003 M5R2 transmission

The M5R2 from 1988–1996 has shift farther forward, so in comes up under the Rangers dash, the later model has sifter farther back within 1" of Ranger's M5R1 transmission's location

So how would I merge the 98 harness with the 90 harness

Now im confused lol, do i need to merge the 2 harnesses? I haven't found any straight forward threads on this newer into older swap. So what do I need to do? And diagrams would help also its a 90 2.3 rwd and the donor is a 98 merc mountaineer. I figured I would need the fuel pump dash harness engine harness, computer, pats. If its not to much to ask please explain this in detail what I need to do and what trans to get then? This has gone from move everything over to rainbow spaghetti.

*2.3 90 ranger with a manual transmission

take the 98 range engine harness and go through it. Simplify it so your only using what you need. When your done you should be able to plug it in the engine and start it up on the stand if you wanted to. Its very simple just time consuming. The full pinout chart on my website will help.
