4x4 will not engage

Just bought the truck- 94 ranger, 4.0L, 5 speed, 4x4 ....on the test drive the push button 4x4 engaged and performed like it should have. now is a different story. The light on the dash to show if 4x4 or 4xlow is engaged will not light up and the front wheels will not receive power. A quick research showed that if there is no light on then it is probably the switch inside the dash. If the light does turn on but no 4x4 engages then it may be the accuator (spelling?), the trans, or the motor.
the lights will not light up in this particular case as stated before so i should start by replacing the switch?
I have been told they are avail on ebay for $12-$20. what would be the formal name for the part? so i know what to purchase.

Is yours a button to push or a knob to turn? If it's a knob, I may have the switch assembly I can part with. Better wait for better informed people to chime in on the problem. Don't want you to waste the time/money on something you may not need.

id check the switch first. ive spent many a hours replacing stuff for it to be the switch
