We have a '99 Ford Ranger and are having trouble with the electric shift motor on the transfer case. The problem is is samething that everyone else on the forum is having trouble with (ie: lights flashing, no sound indicating the 4x4 is engaging, etc.). We bought a re-manufactured motor and when I went to install it, the wiring harness on the old motor has a brown wire going into the back of the transfer case just above and to the right of the shift motor. The re-manufactured motor doesn't have this brown wire coming out of the wire harness plug.

What is the brown wire???

the brown wire is the clutch wire.. you have to remove it from the plug on your old motor. it is a pain to get out but it will come on mine i had to do this to 3 wires green and blue i think were the colors goes up to the sensor at the transfercase output shaft and the brown wire. you also can cut and splice them back together

all yo have to do is take the red insert out of the connector with a pick... it should slide right out an you should be able to push down on a clip an remove that pin for that wire.. then reinstall that pin into the new connector.. we had to replace my buddies shift motor an thats wat we did an worked flawlessly.
