I have a 1991 Ford Ranger XLt with a four-banger 2.3 liter with a 5-speed manual transmission. I know that it is rear wheel drive. Today I noticed is has a light for 4x4 on it. I looked it up in the manual and it says that it is a light for in High 4x4. So do I have a 4x4 and don't even know it? is the standard 1991 have a 4x4 system in it standard?

4 cyl 4x4 are kinda rare. If you don't have push button or the floor shifter you don't have it or a front drive shaft for that matter. The dash panels are mass produced.

It's obvious by peeking at your front axle. It's either the TIB (2wd) or TTB (4wd).

Here's 2WD Twin-I-Beam axle:

Here's 4x4 (Twin-Traction-Beam) axle:

It's a "one size fits all" cluster...
It's cheaper to make 1 part a million times and use it on all the different versions then to make a million different parts.

Or

You have a 4x4.
