4x4 Problems

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4. The problem i am having is that sometimes the 4 wheel drive will engage and sometimes it wont..... sometimes when it does it wont disengage.... it has the trn knob 4x4 switch... I have had the vac lines and the seals replaced.... anyone have any suggestions what could be wrong with it? Thanks for your help

Could be the electric motor on the transfer case. It might just need to be cleaned.
