4x4 problems, Differential?

1998 Ranger XLT 4.0L. The lights go on, the hubs lock, the transmission gears down, but I get no power to the tires. It appears the front drive shaft is spinning, and with locked hubs that leaves the problem at the front differential, which I know nothing about. Is there any type or selenoid or vacuum involved or anyway to self diagnose? ** Problem could be elsewhere if you have suggestions

Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE the hubs lock? It's more than a little difficult to turn a hosed differential without making "interesting" noises.

I thought for sure they were locked. It does make a grinding noise when in four low when trying to shift though. How can I see if they are locked?

Ive checked mine by jacking up truck and turning tire and watching u joints. Not really 100% but try it.

i'll check again, but assuming they are locked and assuming the drive shaft has power, what next?

lets assume your hubs are locked in and that front drive shaft is spining and its not turning the wheels then you should hear some noises. probably some nasty ones too. Does it make any noise?

Surprisingly I don't remember hearing anything. I am going to recheck everything today to make sure hubs are locked and driveshaft spinning.
