4x4 not engaging but shaft always turns

I just bought a 2001 edge with auto. When I switch to 4x hi or low my o/d off light blinks a couple of times but doesn't engage wheels . I also noticed that my front drive shaft always spins . Also I hear a rubbing sound simular to a wheel bearing but it isn't a wheel bearing. Any ideas.

2001.5 has a live axle. The front shaft always turns because the front end can't be disengaged. As for the blinking lights/no 4x4, shit's broke, there are codes, find out what they are.
