I installed manual locking hubs on front of ranger and 4x4 worked fine but now I can not get it to disengage I can unlock the hubs up front of course but it has the knob inside to change transfer case and the knob turns but nothing with gears change? wondering best way to troubleshoot

just to be sure, when you turn the knob, you should hear a click (the transfer case shift motor working), if you don't hear anything,

start by checking your fuse's, and test the wiring at the transfer case shifter motor to see if your getting any current, either with a dvom or just a test light, if you do have power to the shift motor, when you have someone turn the knob, you most likely need to replace the shift motor with a new or good used unit, you could have a bad switch (the knob), although it's pretty unlikely,

It's been awhile since I've done it, but you can also pull the shifter motor and bench test it with 12volt power off a jumper pack, car battery, ect

simple thing. did u try back up a few feet once you take it out? mine sometimes wont come out till i back up and i have a manual tcase.. just a thought. but if not yes going to have to look at shift motor and other electrical parts like stated above.

Yes I have tried the backing up and neutral and forward every thing possible. I tested the switch with an ohm meter and getting what seems to be good readings haven't tested to see weather power is making it to the tcase yet that seems to be the next step because I do not hear any clicking when moving knob

I'm having a simliar problem with a push button 4x4. Took off the Shift Motor today and am replacing it on Friday. The link below is a very good write up on Shift Motors. Maybe try checking this out to see if you can find any other info that might help you out. Best of luck to you. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1102904

project ranger,

I just replaced my Transfer Case Shift Motor, my 4x4 is shifting correctly now. After I replaced it, like everyone said, I could hear the clicking at the motor. I picked up a new motor at a local auto parts store for around $100 (including $25.00).
Hopefully you get the issue resolved.
