ive done some searching and ive tried a few different things to try and get my neighbors 4x4 low to work but have not succeeded. truck is a 96 ranger with electric tcase. it shifts into 4 high just fine but 4 low doesnt work . no noises or anything. i held the brake and shifted to neutral. it has a new shift motor, ive swapped out the "gem" behind the radio and that did nothing. i swapped out which i believe to be the 4x4 relay thats behind the radio on the firewall and that did nothing i swapped the switch and nothing . what else do you guys suggest?

Does the truck has an ABS light on? How about a malfunctioning speedo? The truck needs to think it is sitting still to shift. If it is getting a faulty reading it will not shift at all into 4LO. Try shifting it with the truck turned off, but the key to the on position with it in neutral and foot on brake. See if this works.

Search on "shiftster" and report back.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever seen.

Ever watch the install video. After he tells you have to lay in the mud to lock it in, he tells how if you have auto hubs your an idiot.

Go to the junkyard, but a manual case for $200 and swap it in.

But I guess some of us would rather pull off the side of a expressway, lay in 6 inches of snow, while trying not to get plowed over by the city plows, just so we can engage 4WD when we start to slide in the snow.

Yeah, shiftster = ghey in my book.

shiftster = hero in my book.....for post fail in bfe.

ghey as a manner of standard course though instead of having an manual shift case.

jspafford, i tried that to begin with. and tried it with the vehicle on. no lights are on every thing works as it should. except the 4 low. its for my neighbors truck. its mostly a pavement pounder, but he does use the 4x4 high in the winter to get to work and the 4 low would be nice to have it work.

Hatin' on the shiftster.

My point with that link was to get him to see that it can be shifted manually.

If that works, fix/replace the shift motor.

The Shiftster link has good pictures and was easy to find.

Now, go be useful and find him the shift motor disassembly and repair link....

first, sometimes they wont go into 4low unless you have it in neutral (like you said you did) step on the brake(like you said you did) and third if its a manual, step on the clutch all the way to the floor.... sometimes if you shift from 1st to reverse while on the brake and clutch it somehow cycles it. there is also a control module and the shift motors are a pretty common problem.... if you know anyone that has one, see if they will let you swap it in just to see if it works.... takes about 20mins. ps you have to be completly stopped.

Not necessarily. In my 89 B2 before I swapped to a manual case, it would shift into 4-lo while rolling at any speed under about 2mph. I could feel it engage because the truck would lurch and then slow down with the reduced gearing.

Thats strange... mine wont. maybe a flaw on older ones? glad mine doesnt, i wouldnt really want it to shift to 4 low while i was moving.

You shouldn't have to be stopped to go into 4 low but you have to be under 5mph for the module to make the shift.

oh believe me.. i know how to tinker and mess with them. my first tough truck was an 88 bronco II that had an electric tcase... guess what didnt work.. no biggie i used my own "shiftster" Mr VISE grip. :icon_rofl:

truck is automatic.. ive Done Everything that others have suggested trying and still nothing.. my 95 used to be electric and worked great.... i swapped it out for a manual tcase. price was right so i still have all the spare componets behind my dash and what not..

Try backing up 3-4 ft to release any tension on the driveline. Then try shifting into 4lo. You will have to do the same to get it out of 4 lo. But if this works then there is more stress on the driveline than neccessary prolly due to unevenly worn tires. Or maybe mismatched gearing in the truck. Maybe get into something real sloppy and try shifting it. (have a friend nearby incase it dont work).

Perhaps try unplugging the VSS and see if it shifts?
