We just got hit with our first good snow and my 4wd is intermittent. I have a 2001 ranger xlt, 4.0. After driving for a while sometimes the light comes on and I don't slide when starting out from stop signs etc. In reading other posts, it sounds like it might be the control module, but where is it? Some are behind the passenger kick panel, others are behind the drivers seat. I'm pretty good with a hammer and screwdriver, but electrical leaves me with a headache.

Thanks for your help. I'm glad I found this place

So it is randomly engaging itself? Or kicking out?

Sorry I didn't make it clear. When I first turn the switch to 4wd, nothing happens. After driving for a while, sliding around, all of a sudden I see the light come on and I'm not sliding anymore. It's like after it warms up, either in the cab, or the oil in the transfer case it shifts. It has happened for 3 days in a row now. Even after parking at work leaving it in 4wd, when I get off it no longer is in 4wd until I've driven a few miles. As soon as I see it is not in 4wd, I positing the selector to 2wd because the streets are much cleaner and don't need it, but I check it out randomly to see if it's working.

thanks again
