got a 94 ranger 4.0 4x4 manual trans,,,,i have auto 4x4 but the auto hubs broke and i got superwench manual locking hubs now. so the problem im having is when i put in 4x4 and i turn it makes a grinding noise like someone is dragging a knife across the top of gears,,its weird, but my truck like to stall out when its in 4x4 going in to first like its seized?? any thoughts,,,and yes the diff fluid is good and at level

think i found the problem my self i think i put way to much grease in the hubs.

Yea dude, manual hubs shouldnt have much grease on them.

also try using a heavy gear oil or chainsaw bar & chain oil instead of grease it might make a difference especially in the winter months.

How does the excessive grease make the grinding sound happen though?

on a 91 chevy suburban with auto hubs i had the grease kept them from completely engaging sort of like that grinding you get when not going completely into gear on a stick shift
