Yes, you would need to get a new transmission, (from a 93 - 95 Ford ranger with a 2.3L and factory 4x4, and more then likely I believe it would be a 5 speed manual transmission.)

93-95 transmissions won't work. The duratec has a different bellhousing pattern than the Lima engines. Pretty much the only solution is to take apart your current transmission and put a 4wd tail shaft in it, because Ford never offered this engine with 4wd.

This guy converted his 2004 2wd to 4wd, but he has torsion bar front suspension. Most 2wds have coil springs. But it should give you an idea as to what is involved. Notice what he had to do with the transmission.

i planned on doing a solid axle swap with a dana 30 from a jeep. i know what transfer case to get. where would i get the tail of the transmission off of?

Oh right I keep forgetting that the parts in the M5OD's are interchangable....

You didn't SAY that in your last post. You simply said that a transmission from a 93-95 would work. Which is wrong. Excuse me for clarifying so the OP doesn't go out and buy the wrong trans because of your misinformation.

Well first off I was unaware of any difference between the 2.3L's especially bolt patterns for the housings (I'm sorry but thats just dumb). And since the 93 - 95 transmission is an M5OD it would work because he could remove both the tail housing and output shaft and use it for his own...

And to the OP since you have an automatic I don't think it will be possible to swap over to a 4x4 shaft without converting to stick shift (M5OD) because the automatics aren't as interchangable.

Unless someone with experience with the automatics chimes in... such as them having removable bell housings if they do?

Transfer case, you need a bw1354, which comes in all 4x4 rangers 93+.
Transmission, depends on your engine size and whether you have auto or manual.

Actually any ranger 1991 up and a bit more than half of the 1990's

ford actually switched from the 13-54 to the 13-54 at the end of November 1989 and all rangers produced in december of 1989 or later have the 13-54
Ford switched from the dana28 TTB axle to the Dana35 TTB axle at the same time)

You meant the 13-50 to the 13-54 right? :icon_thumby:

hey guys i took everyones advice and after reading how much of a pain in the ass it is to do a swap i just got a 1999 ranger 4x4. a lot less work.

if yor truck has the same wheel base as in extedend cab to extended cab you could do a body was and use ur motor and just find a 4wd tran and transfer case and up rade the front to a dana 35 later
