4x4 button doesn't work

I'm new to here but I had a question about my 1990 4.0l v6 ranger xlt.

It seems like this is a common problem but I did some searching around but couldn't find anything especially helpful.

Basically I press the 4x4 button and it makes no noise and the light doesn't turn on and it just doesn't work. The low range also doesn't work and it has been like this since I bought it.

Any help would be great! Thanks a bunch

Try the "Tech Section" of this site, under the "Transfer Case" heading, the link called "Troubleshooting" which is highlighted in red, go to the "Diagnosing 1994 & Older Electric Shift Transfer Cases" section. This is a very good write-up of the step-by-step procedure to diagnose the problem with your truck.

Theres another good writeup on cleaning the shift motor which will help with what appears to be switch problems
