could i take the transfer case off of a 4X4 ranger and bolt on the rear housing of a 2wd ranger to the tranny and have it work correctly?

I am not sure exactly what you mean, but.. You can't bolt the transfer case to a 2 wheel drive transmission, you need to have a 4x4 transmission with the correct output. Unless you were to swap parts between the 2wd and 4wd trannys.

lol ok. im tryin to get a 4R44E but it seems to be the hardest thing to find

2wd and 4wd transmissions have different output shafts. If you want to convert a 4wd trans to a 2wd trans (or vice-versa) you need to swap output shafts. Which involves disassembling the entire transmission.
