4WD Will Not WORK

Gotcha me and my pops are going to tackle this tmmr and see what is the problem. .....im going to take off the tcase motor but mark it first and than see if it will move or not while everything is still connected.......hopefully that is the issue with it i guess if it doesnt turn im guessing it is getting no power to it or the tcase motor is bad but i wouldn't guess with it being not even a month old going bad but worse things have happened you know.......and true with the snow we have gotten i would prob want 4x4l even if i dont ever use it with the tires on my truck i wpuld hope 4x4 h would work just fine u know......but ill give you an update tmmr and see what happens.....if i can turn the motor when i take it off with the switch should i manually turn it on the tcase itself to 2wd and pop it back on????

New used to mean tested and it works

New now means not tested but under warranty.

Manufacturers now use the "buyer"(end user) as the Quality Control Department(QCD).
The cost of "parts" has gone down but the cost of labor has gone up, so QCD is, for the most part, a thing of the past.

From a marketing stand point it is a win-win for the manufacturer(and for end user), their costs go down so they can sell for less and make the same profit.
The DIY market likes less expensive parts and provides the free labor which it always did, so no skin off our nose, lol.
And if a part fails we don't tend to blame the maker if they provide a no hassle warranty exchange, we just attribute it to "sh!t happens"
So win-win

Bottom line, new just means it is cleaner on the outside than the old one, lol, so don't dismiss looking at a new part as the failure point, it could be the problem.

Yes, manually turn transfer case shift rod to make sure it is easy to turn.

This video for the Shiftster shows where 2wd, 4wd high and 4wd low are, about 4 min in: http://theshiftster.com/installation-installation-instructions-shiftster

Shiftster makes electric shift into manual shift so takes all the electrics out of the picture, but you do need to get under the truck to shift it.
People with manual locking hubs, leave transfer case in 4high in the winter and just lock and unlock the hubs for driving conditions.
This really takes the guess work out of 4WD working or not

That is really a dang good idea watched the whole video and was really like damn thats a real simple quick fix you know what i mean....im going to take it off tmmr and see what i need to do...im going to pull the tcase motor off have my pops inside have him turn the switch inside and see if the the motor turns and if it does than im good with that if it doesnt i guess ill take it in and get another one but im pretty sure the shiftster has a new customer because that would be super easy to do yeah i know it will be snowing outside or something but if u just know the forcast the day before you can get under there and simply do it and like you said i can just leave it on 4x4h and unlock the hubs like you said im going to get back with you tmmr but thank u for your help.....

RonD/Kurtis:

Automatic Rangers, only shift into 4 Low when the transmission is in Neutral and the Vehicle Speed Sensor, VSS, registers zero speed. (Manuals need the clutch depressed and zero speed).

If you aren't in Neutral when you try to shift, you will get the flashing lights as the GEM can't complete the shift.

Don

Don,

Yes sir I was parked put it in 4x4 h and it shifted over light came on just fine...Put it back in 2wd put it in neutral pressed the brakes and tried switching it to 4wL nothing happened than the 4x4 h and 4x4 l just started flashing I didn't think of nothing kept it in neutral and put it back in 2wd and park and turned the truck off...Came back to the truck about 30m later and tried to put it in reverse and move and the truck is completely stuck won't move at all but the vehicle is stuck in like neutral because I can walk outside push it just fine like it is stuck there...That is when Ron suggested that since it is trying to shift to 4wL it is basically stuck within gears "neutral" and that's why it won't move...So Im going under the truck today to take the motor off and see exactly what it is doing and move it back manually to 2wd and see if the tcase motor will move without it being on the tcase itself....

Ok so an update took it off and sure enough it isnt working....i manually put it back in 2wd and the truck moves again.......as far as the tcase motor its a dud not even a month old taking it back to oriellys to get another one.....trying to get a hold of the shiftster guy and they no longer carry him here or the bronco website and his website is down or something i called and cant get ahold hek i sure do need one gonna get this one put it on see what happes.....

Too bad about the motor, but better sooner than later, out of warranty :)

Haven't tried shiftster ordering in a long time, and sure enough the "Buy it Now" page no longer connects

Try posting in this forum section, "Parts Wanted": http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=173

Maybe someone has one, can't see a used one being too much of a risk

Yeah it seemed like a sound part couldnt see it failing to much u know what i mean...i was even reading on the bronco graveyard the guy had a shiftster 2 which could be switched from the inside so i guess he made it better but sux i cant find anything u know....tmmr im going to put the motor on but quick question even with the motor off the tcase shouldnt it still turn when the switch is turned? I had my pops turned the switch and with it off the tcase motor but the pigtails still connected of course.....but tmmr ill see what happens and hopefully it will work

Yes motor should turn if it is connected to the wiring.

It doesn't need to be grounded to transfer case to operate.
But to shift motor to 4Low you do need to be in Neutral, foot on the brake.

Not sure if Shiftster 2 ever made it into production.

Ok so the new tcase motor is on and works like a charm......only thing i did not do is try the 4x4l hahah dont want to try it and it not work......but crazy thing now that i noticed that wasnt like this before....my vehicle has never leaked before and now it looks like oil is coming out of the exaust where the mufflers connect to the dual exhaust.......i know that isnt good at all but cant see how that would happen any suggestions on that?

You should probably start a new thread for this.

But I doubt oil could be IN the exhaust system, could be leaking down from above and running down outside of the pipe.
Oil has a low burning point so it couldn't travel very far on hot exhaust, and smoke would be noticeable.
Other fluids like brake/trans fluid could be what you are seeing?
Have you adding either of theses lately?

ok will do and no I haven't added either of them...I know my tranny just got rebuilt and I got the vehicle about 2 months ago but it is running fine no smoke coming out but yeah ill post in there....Thank you for all your help so far ron you have helped out a bunch thank you sir.
